A look into Anna Sui's Spring 2027 collection Wonderment.
What began as a research rabbit hole, Anna found herself in the wonders of fantasy and dream-like garments that were capable of telling multiple stories all at once. After encountering a 1972 issue of Vogue, Anna Sui was unknowingly introduced to the Artist, Howard Gardiner Cushing. Sui was entranced by the patterns and distinct colors Cushing communicated through his canvas depicting his subjects through a vibrant lens. Anna Sui has demonstrated an evident taste Cushing also shared, which is curating art that leaves its spectators longing for a feeling that doesn’t exist in our current reality. Whilst both artists did not co-exist in the same timelines, Gardiner’s bold interpretations of early modernism and Sui’s maximalist perspective still coincide in the otherworldly.
Which leads to the concept Anna Sui generated throughout her spring 2027 collection labeled Wonderment. Understanding Anna Sui’s artistic vision requires an elastic expertise in imagination. Instead of promising the audiences a monotone environment, Sui provides a collection omitting inspirations of art nouveau, bohemian visuals, and grunge-esque styles. The Victorian inspired venue was associated with the Cushing's Newport family home, surrounded by porcelain vases and standout art pieces in the background. The models can be seen striding through dimly lit hallways, starkly contrasting the apparel ranging from iridescent hues of lavender, blue, and light pinks. The layered clothing imitating pearl sequences, detailed lace showcasing patterns of nature, fairy-tale-like movement, and intricate embroidery all transmitting Sui’s curiosity in the unknown.
As a designer, Anna offers a lens into our own sub-conscious, as we navigate an oblique and industrialized society, our obligations to creativity dissipate at a rapid pace. Her pieces are synonymous to a reminder, which suggests that we withhold a moral duty to innovation and mischief. Without those human attributes, society collapses and subjugates itself to unfruitful endeavors that lack excitement. Sui consistently conveys this sentiment across most of her collection’s, as the clothing itself reaps the benefits of mythological fiction and human creation. The mixture of historical fashion and alternative realities ultimately revives the word wonderment Anna believes is essential to our collective mind.
